Brother Gary Cregan, O.S.F.
Brother Gary attended parochial schools in Queens and graduated from Saint John’s University with a B.A. in Social Studies/ Secondary Education. He secured a teaching position at Saint Francis Preparatory in Fresh Meadows teaching for four years while also seeing first hand the fine Franciscan education given there.
He entered the Franciscan Brothers and was Professed in August of 1982. His first assignment was to Saint Anthony’s High School in Smithtown and shared in the excitement of those times of flux, uncertainty and expansion to South Huntington. During that time Brother was awarded an M.A. in European History from New York University in 1986 and continued to teach at Saint Anthony’s until 1994.
Brother Gary responded to a Community request to become Vice Principal of Cardinal Gibbons High School in 1994. Along with Brothers Michel, Hugh, Richard Contino and Geoffrey, they oversaw and directed an era of phenomenal growth eventually building a 20 million dollar facility for 1000 students in the Diocese of Raleigh, North Carolina.
Brother Gary holds an Advanced Certificate in School Administration from C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, awarded in 2005. He also received an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Saint Francis College in April 2008.
Brother currently serves on the Board of Trustees at Saint Francis Preparatory and he began as the principal of Saint Anthony’s High School in 2003. He is delighted to be, once again, part of the wonderful Franciscan tradition of education on Long Island.
